Explanation of Symbols
At Mullan Lighting, we are proud of the accreditations we have achieved, reflecting our commitment to quality, safety and more sustainable manufacturing practices. Below is a brief explanation of the symbols and quality assurance marks used across our website.
CE mark
The CE mark indicates that a product complies with the applicable EU safety, health and environmental requirements. CE marking is required for certain products, including light fittings, sold within the European Economic Area. It is similar to the FCC Declaration of Conformity used on certain electronic goods sold in the United States.
UL Certified
The UL mark indicates that a product has been independently evaluated against applicable safety standards. The country codes shown with the mark identify whether the product is certified for the United States, Canada or both. Many Mullan Lighting products are UL Listed for use in the United States and Canada.
UK Conformity Assessed
The UKCA mark indicates that a product complies with the applicable requirements for sale in Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales. The mark was introduced following the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union. CE marking also continues to be accepted for many product categories in Great Britain.
SASO
The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation regulates standards and product conformity in Saudi Arabia. Products imported into Saudi Arabia may require product and shipment Certificates of Conformity. Certification for Mullan Lighting products is available on request.
Waterproof symbol
This symbol identifies moisture-resistant products with a minimum rating of IP44, making them suitable for certain bathroom and outdoor applications. The symbol does not mean that a product is completely waterproof. Always check the individual IP rating and ensure the fitting is suitable for its intended location.
Class 1
A Class I or Class 1 fitting must be connected to electrical earth using a separate earth conductor. This connection is normally provided through a three-core cable.
Class 2
A Class II or Class 2 fitting is double insulated and does not require an electrical earth connection. Additional or reinforced insulation protects the user from contact with live electrical parts.
What does IP rating mean?
An IP, or Ingress Protection, rating shows how well an electrical product is protected against solid objects and water. The first digit represents protection against solids and dust. The second represents protection against water. A higher number generally indicates greater protection. For example, IP54 means that a product is protected against dust and splashing water. IP20 products have no protection against water and are generally intended for dry indoor locations.

Bathroom lighting safety zones
Bathrooms are divided into safety zones according to their proximity to water. Each zone requires lighting with a suitable minimum IP rating. Use the diagram below as a guide and consult a qualified electrician before installation.
